DESCRIPTION: APW - Elgin, Convertible model, 21J, Grade 72, heavy 14K rose gold original P.K. & Co. (Pforzheimer, Keller & Co.) HC with attractive radial fluted detail that is continuous between front, band, and rear, gold cuvette, white enamel DS dial, SW-LS, fully capped lever escapement, quilted pattern nickel damascene, s#607027. Gross weight of assembled watch 81.4 dwt (126.5 g). Based on known examples, it appears likely the total production of the Grade 72 was approximately 450 made with all examples we have encountered falling between serial numbers 607001 and 607450. This early example is just the 27th made by serial number. From the collection of Ethan Lipsig.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, mild toning of plate surfaces, some scattered fine to micro-fine scratches and mild small surface spots, steelwork with some small bits of oxide; dial is not a canister style as is more typically encountered among Grade 72 production but rather has three dial feet to its rear, dial with some scattered hls, edge flake near 11; fine hands, hour and minute are plum colored and have some mild bends, seconds-hand is blue; case shows light wear, ding to fluted portions of rear slightly right of edge of central shield with corresponding ding to cuvette, front and rear with few lesser mild dings and nicks scattered elsewhere, reduced fluting detail, case front, rear, and cuvette open somewhat short of 90 degrees (to approximately 80 degrees each); tight bow within somewhat larger pendant sockets, replacement crown shows very little wear; plastic crystal with internal circular marks from hand rub.
